My view for private instruction takes on an approach that develops many facets of a student's overall musicianship. Along with private instruction on their instruments, students get enrolled in my musicianship academy that is based off of the karate belt test system.
My own kids all began studying karate and martial arts at a young age and, as someone who never studied karate myself, I was BLOWN AWAY with how much the concept translated to music education. I've developed a system that models the belt system. Each belt represents a level of musician from beginner to advanced. All students enter as "White Belt" level students. Each belt has 6 different areas of study which students need to earn their stripe. (For a look at the different areas of study, click here.). Stripes are achieved based on individual performance. (As students develop their skill, they earn stripes.). Once all stripes for a belt are achieved, students have the opportunity to advance to the next belt level.

Beginning with basic scales and moving through region and all state level solos.
Starting from the basic notes on the staff to go all the way through AP Music Theory level curriculum and/or collegiate composition/arranging.
Tiered work to have students develop their ability to read any piece of music put in front of them. After reading develops, transcription comes in and develops to odd-meter reading and reading multiple lines of music at a time.
Specific study of jazz phrasing, articulation, and concept. Based on student ability to mimic recordings to develop their concept, the etudes get increasingly more challenging.
Develop your ability to hear if notes are in or out of tune, all the way up to transcription and aural recognition of complex harmony. All tiered based on student ability
Become exposed to and aware of historically significant music from large and small ensembles. As your ability to recognize and identify major recordings and artists develops, more music becomes assigned.
